Review of Bhaag Beani Bhaag

Introduction

The large part of the year 2020 has been a dry period, as far as movie and show biz is concerned. Throughout the year, we were bound to entertain ourselves by watching old flix on OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Zee5. We have recently been blessed to watch new content as the production houses have started releasing their content in theatres and digital platforms. It was this Sunday Evening when I was getting bored and decided to turn on Netflix to check out the latest flicks.

On the home page, I was welcomed by the poster of Swara Bhaskar on her new comic series Bhaag Beanie Bhaag. I was curious to watch the trailer right away. There is something about Swara that makes the content look artistic. The trailer grasped my attention immediately. As a rebel and a wannabe stand-up comic myself, I was drawn to it and played it from the beginning.

The Review

So, Beanie Bhatnagar (Swara Bhaskar) is an ambitious girl who has wanted to become a widely popular stand up comic since she saw Shekhar Suman performing in the childhood. But her parents (Girish Kulkarni and Mona Ambegaonkar) have no engagement to this passion of hers. They are typically middle-class parents who have planned out her entire life even before her birth and are completely blind & deaf towards any dreams, desires, or fantasies that she might have. There is also a three-year-long relationship with her boyfriend, Arun (Varun Kalra), a decent guy with all the perfect Punjabi husband traits. The sad part is that even he does not care when she talks about her interest in front of him. The plot is impeccable and relatable to the mindset of the youth of India.

Beanie’s life looks perfect from an outsider’s perspective as she has a stable job, loving parents, and a rich fiancé. At her Roka, Beanie gathers the courage to leave her stable life and pursue her dream instead. She decides to live with her friend Kavi till she makes a name for herself in the comic industry.

During her earlier performances, she develops feelings of self-doubt that she is probably not that funny and has left everything for nothing. While going through these tough times, she meets Ravi Patel (as himself), a divorced NRI who is also struggling in the industry. Ravi tries to make her laugh and ease her stress out every time they meet. He also suggests her to accept herself to make things realistic and relaxing. There comes a moment when Beanie falls for him and gets intimate with her in a public restroom. Soon after, she comes to know that Ravi is, in fact, not divorced and is just preaching this accepting oneself philosophy. She makes fun of him in the gig and breaks up with him.

After breaking up with both his lovers, she is invited to marriage to do her gig, where she ends up meeting both of them. Arun comes with his new hot fiancé (Neeti Mohan) and gives a fantastic couple-dance performance. Beanie starts doubting her decision and eventually conversing with him at the party and kissing him the next day.

But between all this drama, what does not engage is the stand-up events, which look aesthetically real but miss the fun element.

Conclusion

Many questions have come up after Season 1, which makes it evident that the writers Nisha Kalra, Ravi Patel, Neel shah (The Bold Type, Powerless), and Devashree Shivadekar (Blind Date, Bucket List) were planning for Season 2 from the beginning.

The series has been well directed by Debbie Rao (Pushpavalli, The Office), Ishaan Nair, and Abi Varghese (Brown Nation, Metro Park) and is cinematographically pleasing too.

When I checked IMDB after watching the entire season, I was shocked to see the rating of 2.7.  This show deserves 6-6.5 stars out of 10 for the effort. I will conclude by saying that ambitious people will relate to this show and Swara’s character. Make sure you watch this one instead of giving it up just because of the bad reviews.
